How to Tune a Violin
A clear, step-by-step guide to standard violin tuning, including the correct pitches, perfect-fifth intervals, peg positions, fine tuners, and reference tones for all four strings.
Standard violin tuning
The violin is tuned in perfect fifths: G–D–A–E. In traditional tuning, begin with the A string, match it to concert A (440 Hz), then tune the remaining strings from there.
The basic tuning process
A violin has four strings tuned a perfect fifth apart. The standard pitches are G, D, A, and E. For traditional tuning, establish a reliable A first, then tune the other strings relative to it.
Match the A string to concert A, normally A = 440 Hz.
Tune D to A, then G to D, and finally E to A.
Play neighboring string pairs together and make small final adjustments.
Hear the four violin pitches
Use these reference tones to hear the target pitch for each open string.
Tip: the violin’s open A is the A above middle C. Standard concert pitch is A = 440 Hz.
How to tune a violin by ear
The traditional method uses a reference pitch for A, then tunes the remaining strings by listening for clean perfect fifths.
Establish your A reference pitch
Begin with concert A, normally A = 440 Hz. You can get this pitch from a properly tuned piano, a tuning fork, a metronome with a pitch generator, or another reliable reference source.
If you use a piano, playing the D and F immediately below A can help some players hear the A more clearly because the three notes form a D minor chord.
Tune the A string first
Pluck the A string gently with your finger or play it with the bow while listening to your reference pitch. When facing the violin, the A string is the third string from the left.
Trace the A string into the pegbox to find its peg. The A peg is the upper peg on the right side. Make very small adjustments until the violin’s A matches the reference pitch.
Tune the D string to the A
Once the A string is correct, tune the D string, which is the second string from the left. D to A is a perfect fifth. Play D and A together and listen for a smooth, stable interval.
The D peg is the upper peg on the left side of the pegbox. Beginners with access to a piano may find it easier at first to match the D string directly to the piano’s D above middle C.
Tune the G string to the D
Next tune the G string, the lowest string and the far-left string when facing the violin. Again, listen for a clean perfect fifth between G and D.
The G peg is the lower peg on the left side. If using a piano as a reference, match the violin’s G to the G below middle C.
Tune the E string to the A
The E string is the highest string and the far-right string when facing the violin. Because it is thin and held at relatively high tension, many violins have a fine tuner on the tailpiece for the E string.
Use the fine tuner for small corrections. If the E string is far out of tune, the lower-right peg may need adjustment, but move it cautiously because even a small turn can change the pitch considerably.
Check all four strings again
After tuning each string, play neighboring pairs together: G–D, D–A, and A–E. Listen for clean fifths and make any final small adjustments.
Small adjustments are the key
When using a tuning peg, it is often helpful to slightly lower the pitch first and then gently bring the string upward to the correct pitch. This helps the string settle and makes fine adjustments easier to control.
Peg tuning takes practice. At first you may move back and forth several times before finding the correct pitch. With experience, the small movements needed to tune each string become much more natural.
If your violin has fine tuners on more than just the E string, use them whenever the pitch is already close. Fine tuners are designed for the last small corrections.
Quick tuning checklist
- Start with a reliable concert A.
- Tune the A string first.
- Tune D and G using perfect fifths.
- Tune E carefully, preferably with the fine tuner.
- Recheck G–D, D–A, and A–E.
A clip-on tuner can make the process easier
Beginners who are not yet comfortable tuning by ear may prefer a clip-on electronic tuner. A tuner such as the Snark SN-5 attaches directly to the instrument and shows whether each string is sharp, flat, or in tune. Electronic tuners are convenient, but learning to hear the open strings and perfect fifths is still a valuable skill.
Check your tuning regularly
Violins can drift out of tune as temperature and humidity change, as strings stretch, and during active playing. Check the tuning before every practice session or rehearsal, and recheck it periodically while playing. New strings may need especially frequent adjustment until they settle.
A well-tuned violin makes everything easier to hear.
